It was a wet start for our Winter Woollies Wander on Saturday 1st July. We had alternating periods of sunshine and hard rain squalls, but this did not deter the 35 keen and hardy club members and visitors. We met at the Masonic Lodge in Warkworth for a coffee & a biscuit and to pick up the rally packs in the red bags kindly donated by New World Warkworth. The route was planned by last year's local winner, Steve Watson: starting in the large puddles on the parking lot behind the Masonic Hall, we travelled along West Coast Road to the intersection with SH16. From there we headed north to Tapora, with expansive views of the Kaipara harbour, dodging the numerous potholes which have become an unwanted feature of our roads, both sealed and unsealed .Lunch was laid on in the Tapora Community Hall by the parents of the local schoolchildren, and to be greeted with a mug of hot soup was very welcome. After lunch we headed home via Wellsford and over the steep Matakana Valley Road to finish at The Wharf in Warkworth. In the evening we met at the Warkworth Bowling Club for drinks, dinner, prize-giving and a quiz. On Sunday morning some of the contestants went on a shed raid to see Paul Hick's Bugatti which he hopes to have on the road soon, but he is frustrated by delays in the engineering workshop which are holding up completion. After that we had an enjoyable and talkative barbeque lunch in the Clubhouse to round out the event and fuel up the contestants for the trip home.
